Welcome! The days are long, the sunsets spectacular, the kids are barefoot, and there are people walking around town that I don’t recognize… The summer season is upon us!
The SCS has a lot on the go - our Moresby Market has started up again for the season, Loggers Sports Day is coming up quickly, and our Visitor Centre is in full swing, open everyday to welcome visitors and sell wares from local makers.
There’s also whisperings about the reemergence of one of our most popular festivals this fall..
Remember, if you happen to have anything to contribute for these monthly(ish) newsletters (be it an upcoming event, a notice, a community photo, or perhaps an interesting story about the town from long ago..) please don’t hesitate to reach out! I can be reached at info@sandspitcommunitysociety.com Stay safe and well, Amber (plus Flavien, Lauren & Heron) The Sandspit Community Society

Mark your calendars - Loggers Sports Day is back on July 29th! Originally run by a subcommittee of the Moresby Island Management Committee, this annual event is now overseen by the SCS and a group of very dedicated volunteers. This event has been happening in Sandspit for almost 60 years and is open for anyone to participate in. There are lots of prizes and it is a fun time for all! Follow the event page for more details: https://www.facebook.com/events/1491933391336575
We are in real need of food vendors for this year! Food was in short supply last year, so it’s sure to be a great opportunity to sling some sandwiches, brew up some coffee, flip some burgers and make some dollar bills! Interested in coming over from Graham Island as a food vendor? We’ll cover your ferry!

The first few markets have been a slow but steady success. There have been a wonderful array of vendors (including some new faces)! Every Sunday through the summer; 11-1 at ALM School Walkway *No market on August 13* (EOTW Music Festival)
|
|
Do you remember the delicious sausages, honey and BBQ sauce last year? We have good news for you! The market has partnered with the Speckled Sow Butchery again this year and they will be attending the market in-person on Sunday, July 2 for the Canada Day long weekend! Be sure to stop by as this will very likely be the ONLY opportunity this year to purchase their products.

The Moresby Market is always looking for new vendors and there are a variety of ways to get involved! Annual membership is only $50/year for adults and $25/year for children. Drop-in fee is $10/table. An affordable option for occasional attendance. A collective table is available for those who are unable to attend in-person for any reason. Simply drop off your wares at set-up time (10:30-11am) and pick up at closing time (1-1:15pm). Vendors receive 75% of revenue, paid monthly.
Questions and comments can be directed to Kelsey Kricheldorf at moresbymarket@gmail.com. See you at the market soon!

Thanks to all who continue to drop off cans and bottles as a donation to the recycling depot. It helps the youth of Sandspit and keeps the landfill a little less full! The cans & bottles recycle is a volunteer program where all money raised is given to youth programs in Sandspit. Every Saturday morning year-round, young people sort and are given a cash honourarium for their work. They learn job skills and responsibilities along with earning money. All remaining cash goes toward the PAC at school and youth programs in town such as the Willows Junior Golf program.
A current project is money being held aside to help pay for new bikes for the Palestinian family moving to town.
A big thank you goes to Dean, Harvey and the crew at Super-Valu for accepting the cans & bottles every Saturday morning. Depot Notes:
It would be greatly appreciated if cans/bottles were pre-sorted into the following separate bags/boxes: -beer cans (& any cans that held an alcoholic beverage)
-pop cans -water bottles -wine bottles
**Please note milk containers and/or tetra juice packs are no longer accepted due to hygiene concerns. Pre-sorting will help the kids sort quicker, especially during the busy summer months!

Moresby Trails Feature: Kwuna Point
|
|
Kwuna Point This very pleasant loop boasts great views of Skidegate Inlet! Level: moderate to easy hike Length: 45mn to an hour Trailhead: at the old government dock parking area. It is a very sharp turn to Kwuna point road, just before the ferry landing as you arrive from Sandspit. The paved road then gently rolls to the government dock. There is a memorial marker next to the dock that commemorates an event from WWII, when Alliford Bay was a busy RCAF floatplane base. The trail starts behind the marker and the route is fairly straightforward.
Expect some ups and downs, roots and blowdowns can be in the way, and some slippery sections are to be expected at any time. Go as far as you feel comfortable and double back if the trail becomes too challenging.
At the end of the loop, you will arrive near Smuggler’s cove, at which point you will be walking back to your vehicle on the paved road.
Please note that the dock is deactivated and cannot be used at this time.
Please “leave no trace” and take all your garbage with you. We encourage you to also pick up any garbage that may have been left behind by other visitors.
Like many other trails on Haida Gwaii, this trail is user maintained.
If you would like to know more about local trails and volunteering opportunities to clean up and upgrade trails, get in touch with Flavien at flavien@sandspitcommunitysociety.com
